Lunar Eclipse of 2026-08-27

This image of the partial lunar eclipse of 2028-08-27 taken at time of greatest eclipse shows the pale blue band between the sunlit penumbral crescent at the top of the image and reddened disk of the moon beneath it. The pale blue band is caused by sunlight filtered by ozone in Earth's stratosphere. Ozone absorbs red light and passes blue light, so this region of the eclipsed moon appears pale blue.
